The Status of Sofawolf Press

When Sofawolf Press was founded in 1999 the Furry community was quite small, and in the following decades it grew tremendously, with the largest conventions now topping 20,000 attendees. As the Furry community grew, Sofawolf Press grew with it.

What started as a passion project among friends turned into something much larger than we’d ever planned or expected. We found ourselves publishing award-winning novels and graphic novels, attending conventions around the world, and contributing to the livelihood of authors and artists at the very beginning of what we now know as a fully realized creator economy.

Even with all of these accolades and accomplishments, Sofawolf fell upon challenging times in the late 2010s, and these issues were only exacerbated by the impacts of COVID in 2020 and 2021. Instead of communicating these challenges to our customers and creators, openly and honestly, we went silent, leaving people wondering what was going on. This was our first mistake. 

In 2025 we realized we needed to make a final decision as to the future of Sofawolf Press. After a lot of research, re-engagement with the Furry community, and a better understanding of the creator economy and our ability to serve it, we decided there was not just a place for Sofawolf Press, but an opportunity to build something even better.

In our excitement to rebuild, though, we lost sight of the reason we started the press in the first place: to share with the world the amazing creativity of our friends and partners, and to fill the world with exceptional Furry stories. We were so excited about building for the future that we neglected our past. We began attending conventions again and engaging with the community but still didn't communicate with the creators we'd worked with for years to let them know our plans. This was our second mistake.

People trusted us with their creative works and their creative livelihood, and we failed to live up to that responsibility. We didn’t sufficiently respect the relationships we had built over the years, and for that we sincerely and deeply apologize. We should have done better in communicating the challenges we were facing, and just as importantly we should have communicated more quickly once we started down a path of rebuilding Sofawolf.

We are now working to address these past mistakes and have reached out to the artists and authors with whom we still have an active business relationship. We have updated them on the status of their works with Sofawolf, and are actively working with them to resolve any outstanding royalty payments.

In addition, we’re making some operational changes that we feel will position Sofawolf for success as we work on rebuilding our community’s trust. In addition to the operational changes, we are revisiting Sofawolf’s mission and vision to ensure they continue to reflect the values of a Furry community that has grown and evolved over the past 27 years.

We are overjoyed by what the Furry community has grown into, and we’re proud to have been part of it. We consider ourselves stewards for not just the creators that we partner with, but for the Furry community as well. We have made mistakes along the way, but our commitment to you is that we will continue to learn from them. We also ask for your continued patience and grace as we tackle these new challenges. We will share what we learn along the way, and we ask that you continue to hold us accountable when we mess up.

While our primary focus at the moment is resolving any outstanding issues, we remain excited about the projects we have in progress, and we look forward to sharing more details in the near future. We hope that you will join us on the next evolution of Sofawolf Press.
